Message from Mr Edward Dewhurst, Chairman of Edward Dewhurst Limited.

MY grandfather opened an electrical shop in Preston with a few pounds of his own money in 1887. It was one of the first electrical showrooms in England, a decade after street lights were first used on a public road in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It made headline news in our local newspaper, the Lancashire Evening Post. Not many companies can say that they’ve been around since then, when Queen Victoria celebrated her Golden Jubilee and the famous artist L.S Lowry was born. And all those years later, Edward Dewhurst remains a private family-owned business, managed by the fifth generation of the family, John and Paul. Although now retired, I play an active role as chairman, and I’m incredibly proud of my son’s achievements.

In 2012, we celebrated our 125th centenary, a very notable milestone. It has certainly amazed me how our family firm has endured and adapted to the demands and challenges of a changing environment.

Mr Edward Dewhurst - Chairman of Edward Dewhurst Limited.

In the last century, electrical engineering and contracting work was the mainstay of Edward Dewhurst’s work - and it remains a very important part of the company.

Indeed, our highly skilled workforce continues to offer a wealth of experience and expertise within the electrical contracting industry. And from our base, ideally situated on Preston’s Docklands development, we have completed commissioned work for industrial and commercial sectors as well as Public and Government Authorities throughout the United Kingdom. And our commitment to ongoing improvement has seen us fulfil multi-million projects for BAE Systems, Lancashire County Council, Morecambe Bay NHS Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.

I am particularly proud of our staff, and as a company we are far more open to change now. But it is, I believe, the high standard of customer service which has laid the foundation stone for successful and long-standing relationships with our loyal customers in the electrical engineering and contracts sector.
